Guam Casino Battles Goes to Court12 January 2006GUAM – As reported by the Guam Pacific Daily News: "The legal battle over casino gambling on Guam continues today in the Superior Court of Guam, where supporters of legalized casinos will push to have the 2004 election results thrown out and another election held. "Guam voters in November 2004 overwhelmingly defeated Proposal A, which would have legalized casino gambling in as many as 10 large hotels here. The measure was defeated 21,223 to 13,311. "The sponsors of the casino measure, Citizens for Economic Diversity, have argued that the election process was flawed because the Guam Election Commission failed to mail the entire text of the 82-page gaming initiative to voters before the election, as required by law. "…However, the attorney general's office issued a legal opinion in October 2004, stating the ballot pamphlets are flawed and the casino election results therefore cannot be enforced…" |
