Groups Complain About New York Gambling Hearing

ALBANY, New York – As reported by the Albany Times-Union: "Some anti-casino activists and New York tribes are complaining that the Senate is excluding them from an upcoming hearing on a massive expansion of gambling in the state.

"The groups were denied to have speakers at Senate hearings that start Monday on Gov. George Pataki's bill to settle Indian land claims and allow five Native American casinos in the Catskills. And they question whether they'll get to have their say at any follow-up hearings.

"…Invited speakers include officials from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the five tribes involved in the governor's bill -- including three out-of-state groups -- and at least one college instructor familiar with land claim history.

"James Maney, executive director of the New York Council on Problem Gambling, said he has been included as a speaker. He will call for a comprehensive plan to combat gambling addictions. Pataki's bill calls for $10 million a year for problem gambling programs…"
