Group wants to stop Michigan casino27 February 2007MICHIGAN – As reported by the Grand Rapids Press: "Anti-casino groups plan to ask a judge this week to stop the federal government from taking land into trust that would be used for a Wayland Township casino. "The request would come in response to Friday's ruling by a U.S. District Court judge in Washington, D.C., that dismissed Michigan Gambling Opposition's suit against the U.S. Department of Interior. "MichGO sued the federal government last year to keep it from taking land into trust for the Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians that would be used for a casino and entertainment facility. "MichGO wants a federal injunction to halt proceedings to take the land into trust pending a planned appeal, group spokesman John Helmholdt said. "Without a stay, the land could go into trust, essentially eliminating grounds for appeal because a decision to take land into trust is not reversible, he said…" |
