Group Proposes Casino for Southeast Kansas

GALENA, Kansas -- As reported by the Morning Sun: "The group Kansans for Economic Growth, LLC wants to see a destination casino in southeast Kansas. It wants to see it so much, it has already had plans drawn for a 250-room hotel and 80,000 square-foot casino.

"Plans for the resort and casino and a forecast of what the complex could do for the southeast Kansas economy were unveiled at a press conference in Galena on Friday.

"During the 2004 legislative session Gov. Kathleen Sebelius proposed the Expanded Gaming Opportunity Act. Under the act Kansas would have owned and operated up to five 'world-class, destination casinos.' The casinos would have been built by private developers and run by private management firms with help from the Kansas Lottery. No state investments would be involved with the casinos.

"In response to Sebelius' proposal for 'destination casinos' the Kansas Lottery commissioned a study to find prime locations for destination casinos. To the surprise of Lottery officials, the firm of Christiansen Capital Advisors found that southeast Kansas, and more specifically Galena, would be the best bet for a complex in the state.

"This study, released in March, spurred the founding of Kansans for Economic Growth, which is based in Galena.

"…For the past 12 years the Kansas legislature has been hashing out the pros and cons of expanded gaming and each year the session has ended without an approved plan…"
