Group Plans To Resurrect Moulin Rouge10 February 2004LAS VEGAS – As reported by News Channel 10: ``A group of black business owners has purchased the long-closed Moulin Rouge property and plans to build a $200 million locals' casino resurrecting and celebrating the historic hotel. The new Moulin Rouge will incorporate much of the iconic signage and features of what is left of the old hotel, much of which was destroyed by arson in 2003. Developers plan 500 hotel rooms, a 40,000-square-foot casino, a Motown Cafe, a nightclub and movie theaters. Integral to the design will be a museum and cultural center celebrating black history in the area and the key role the Moulin Rouge played in race relations for Las Vegas. When it opened in 1955, it was the only desegregated casino in the city and attracted big name entertainment like Sammy Davis Jr. and the Rat Pack, who often did informal gigs in the Tropica-can Showroom, a replica of which will be included in the new hotel. ``…If all goes according to plan, the new Moulin Rouge will open by late 2005…" |
