Great Blue Heron Casino Threatened with Strike

TORONTO, Ontario – (PRESS RELEASE) -- CAW-Canada has set a strike deadline of Thursday, July 15, 12:01 a.m., in an effort to reach an agreement with the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino, covering 700 workers in Port Perry, Ontario. The parties have had a number of meetings and many of the outstanding issues of contract language and wages and benefits are still to be resolved.

CAW-Canada and the Great Blue Heron Gaming Company opened bargaining for a first contract on February 18, 2004. The CAW is striving for a fair and just agreement for our members. After 13 months and labour board hearings the parties sat down to negotiate a first collective agreement for the 700 employees who work at the Casino.

Bargaining was made possible because of a December 2003 decision from the Ontario Labour Board stating that the Casino is governed by the legal framework of the Ontario Labour Relations Act and must commence bargaining with the CAW.
