Governor Schwarzenegger Opposes Proposed Federal Amendments24 March 2004SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has weighed in with pointed opposition to proposed amendments to a landmark federal law that set the legal boundaries for Indian gaming. "Schwarzenegger registered his criticism in a letter to Sens. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., and Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, on the eve of a hearing on legislation to rewrite the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. "…The measure, Senate Bill 1529 by Campbell, was scheduled to be heard this morning in the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, which Campbell chairs. The bill faces tribal opposition and isn't expected to pass. "Schwarzenegger objected to revisions that he said would undermine the state's regulatory authority over Indian casinos and limit its ability to negotiate revenue-sharing agreements with tribes…" |
