Governor Refuses New Orleans Request for Casino Money

13 June 2005

Las Vegas Sun

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Gov. Kathleen Blanco has rebuffed lawmakers from New Orleans who want her to intervene in the state's refusal to provide millions of casino tax money owed to the city.

The House members met with Blanco on Wednesday evening to request her help with the budget bills now in the Legislature, hoping to ensure that New Orleans gets its share of taxes from Harrah's New Orleans Casino, as provided in the state's contract with the gambling hall, according to The Times-Picayune.

City officials say the state owes New Orleans $3.6 million this year and is about $9 million in arrears for the extra expenses of police, fire and sanitation services that came with the casino. None of the state's pending budget bills contain an appropriation to pay the city, and Blanco told the representatives to take their request to the senators reviewing the budget bills.
