Governor Pataki's Video Gambling Education Plan Criticized

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Newsday: "Gov. George Pataki is gambling that his proposal to help the state's poorer students get a decent education will pass muster with its highest court.

"But his plan to set aside $100 million in matching funds for city schools and turn $325 million in video lottery proceeds into a statewide education fund drew fire from Democratic legislators.

"Advocates for public schools, meanwhile, suggested the increased funding in the Pataki budget would fall well short of ensuring what the Court of Appeals, in a landmark decision, called the minimum requirement of a 'sound, basic education' for every student in the state.

"…Under the governor's proposal, the $100-million matching grant would go to high-need city schools, and Pataki aides said funds from city coffers would create a partnership to ensure the lowest-performing schools get all the money they can…"
