Governor Cites Problem With Md. Slots Election11 August 2004ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Gov. Robert Ehrlich raised a new problem with the latest slot machine proposal from House Speaker Michael Busch Tuesday, saying several pro-slots lawmakers have told him they will not support a constitutional amendment that would let voters decide if they want expanded gambling in Maryland. "...But he would not rule out the possibility that something might be worked out between the administration and legislative leaders. "Busch, a key opponent of slot machines the past two years, offered the constitutional amendment last week as a way to break the gambling stalemate. "...The amendment would authorize up to 13,000 machines at six locations. Busch's plan also includes a bill that would provide mechanisms for deciding how many machines would be at each location and the percentage of the revenues that would go to public schools, local governments, the racing industry and companies that would operate slot machine facilities..." |
