Gettysburg Protesters Want Buffer Zone12 January 2006HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Protesters opposed to a plan to open a slot machine casino near Gettysburg came to the state Capitol yesterday, led by advocates of 'heritage touris'm" a Lancaster girl who takes part in Civil War re-enactments, and Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant. "Well, not the real Grants -- the Civil War general and his wife were portrayed by Larry and Constance Clowers of Gettysburg. "…They, along with Susan Star Paddock, leader of a 6-month-old citizens group called No Casino Gettysburg, Mary Goundrey, of the Civil War Preservation Trust, and others urged the state House Tourism Committee to require a 15-mile buffer zone between any Pennsylvania casino and a national park or battlefield site run by the National Park Service. "Such a distance requirement would kill the proposed Crossroads Gaming Resort and Spa near the intersection of Routes 15 and 30, about 35 miles south of Harrisburg. "Kathryn Simpson, a lawyer for the Crossroads Casino, strongly opposed the 15-mile separation rule, saying it would be 'arbitrary and unfair' for the state to impose new rules on would-be casino operators when they had just submitted voluminous license applications to the state Gaming Control Board…" |
