Georgia: Horse-racing advocates happy with gambling bill

7 March 2011

ATLANTA, Georgia -- A House committee voted to approve an amendment that would see expanded legalized gambling, The Augusta Chronicle reported.

Now the bill requires approval in full House, Senate, followed by voter approval in an election, and finally, voters where the track is built must also approve it, the report explained.

Horse racing advocates, who have been hoping for expansion for the past 20 years, are galvanized by this new possibility, The Augusta Chronicle said.

Historically such bills have died at the committee stage, the report noted.
