Genting Highlands Gets Makeover

MALAYSIA – As reported by IOL News; "Nestled among more than 4 300 hectares of dense forest and 2 000m above sea level, Malaysia's oldest casino resort is undergoing an image revamp in its bid to out- do increasing competition with a reputation of being a 'city of entertainment'.

"Genting Highlands Resort, about 80km east of Kuala Lumpur, has in recent years transformed to become an entertainment getaway as it slowly sheds a traditional image of casino haven for middle-aged gamblers.

"Initially conceived as a retirement resort in the 1960s by founder Lim Goh Tong, Genting first made a name for itself as a hilltop casino after obtaining a rare gambling license from the predominantly Moslem Malaysian government.

"Genting now boasts a theme park with more than 60 rides, 90 food and beverage outlets offering fare that ranges from fast food to fine dining, a post office, a 24-hour clinic, a supermarket, numerous retail shops, a spa and workout studio.

"…While the core of Genting's profits comes from the casino, officials said most of the 15 million visitors who visit the complex on average every year come for the amusement rides, the live entertainment or just to escape from the tropical heat of the lowlands.

"…The rebranding of Genting comes at a crucial time when global players in the casino and gaming industry are moving to become flashier, bigger and, most importantly, closer to home.

"Neighbouring Singapore's upcoming casino as well as the recent opening of Hong Kong's Disneyland will surely provide fierce competition, seeing as the bulk of Genting's visitors have been Singaporean and Chinese…"
