Gaming Would Aid Education28 January 2004OKLAHOMA – As reported by the Oklahoman: ``The latest draft of a proposed Indian gaming compact would put all of the state's share of gambling profits into education, with the bulk funding a teachers' health care plan unveiled last week. ``Also, the state will try to tie the compact to tribes' compliance with separate agreements on tobacco sales, The Oklahoman has learned. ``Federal law requires a state compact for tribes to offer Class III, Las Vegas-style gambling. ``State officials instead propose that tribes and three horse racing tracks offer 'gray area' electronic games that fall between Class II and Class III. ``…Tribes would pay the state 4 percent to 6 percent of net revenues, depending on annual profit. ``Finance Secretary Scott Meacham, Gov. Brad Henry's point man on the gaming compact negotiations, has estimated the state could make $70 million to $80 million a year…" |
