Gambling Warnings Come Amid Basketball Tournament1 March 2004INDIANA – As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "One of Indiana's most famous basketball voices is hitting the airwaves for the college basketball championship tournaments, but not to promote the games. "Indiana Pacers announcer and former player Clark Kellogg is warning radio listeners against sports betting during the Big Ten college basketball tournaments and the NCAA tournament. The spots, which have begun airing on WIBC-AM (1070) and Network Indiana stations, will be broadcast until the start of the Final Four tournament on April 2. "'I want you to watch out for fans who have too much madness in March,' Kellogg says in the commercials. 'If you know someone who seems a little too stressed or tense while watching basketball, it might be the symptom of a gambling problem.' "This is the second year the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute has run commercials featuring Kellogg. "…The agency airs similar commercials featuring Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy during the NFL playoffs, Edgar said. "…Though sports betting is illegal in Indiana, the NCAA tournament often sparks betting pools at offices, bars and on Web sites. "…Officials hope the commercials help prevent that -- or at least get people to recognize the symptoms of compulsive gambling, which include lying about gambling, relying on others to provide gambling money and repeated unsuccessful attempts to stop gambling…" |
