Gambling Ringleader Pleads Guilty

FLORIDA -- As reported by the News-Press: ``John J. Rodney Jr. - alias Dan 'the Man' Wilson - pleaded guilty Tuesday to running a sports betting ring that became the biggest illegal gambling operation in Lee County history.

``Rodney, 42, started Player's Edge Inc. on Sept. 1, 1993, and spent more than a decade raking in millions of dollars from gamblers who fell for the company's claims that it had "inside information" on sporting events.

``Dressed in a dark blue suit and a red tie, Rodney stood before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheri Polster Chappell and described how the ring did business as he admitted charges of conspiracy and operating an illegal gambling business.

``…The ring - which last November became known as National Sports Consultants - advertised its services in infomercials played on radio stations in major cities around the country.

``…According to an affidavit signed by FBI Special Agent Michael Brett Hood, agents collected evidence by going through the trash outside the ring's offices and by calling the toll-free number…"
