Gambling Ring Busted, Couple Held19 April 2005MALAYSIA -- As reported by the Strait Times: "They were receiving stakes of up to RM30,000 per day in their illegal betting operation. "They also operated from a posh condominium equipped with closed-circuit TV cameras in the popular tourist destination of Cameron Highlands. "The husband and wife team probably thought they had it all - until yesterday, that is, when police caught up with them following a tip-off. "...'From the betting slips we seized from the couple, the stakes totalled RM30,000 daily,' Senior Assistant Commissioner II Wan Mohamed told reporters today. "...The couple is being investigated under Section 4(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000 or a jail term of up to five years upon conviction..." |
