Gambling Probe May Help North Carolina Incumbent1 June 2004NORTH CAROLINA – As reported by the (North Carolina) News Observer: "A gambling investigation in Randolph County that became public last month may add to the support for a video poker ban -- and make the path to re-election a little easier for state Rep. Arlie Culp, a Randolph County Republican. "One of Culp's two opponents in the Republican primary, Clarence Ray 'Bucky' Jernigan, is at the center of the video poker investigation conducted by the state Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and the Asheboro Police Department. "Alcohol Law Enforcement agents allege in court papers that Jernigan, a video poker machine vendor, allowed customers to make illegal cash payouts on his machines and provided free legal representation when they got caught, according to a Greensboro News & Record report. "…The legislature is grappling with the video poker issue this session. The Senate overwhelmingly passed a ban last year, but the House has yet to vote on the bill. House Democratic Speaker Jim Black opposes it. "…Culp, who said he supports a ban, is also being challenged by Jim Parker of Liberty for the GOP nomination…" |
