Gambling Measures Likely to Go To Court

NEBRASKA -- As reported by the Nebraska Herald: "If Nebraska voters approve competing gambling measures in November, the courts will almost assuredly have the final word on the games gamblers may finally play, both gambling backers and opponents said Friday.

"Compounding the confusion over putting multiple gambling proposals before voters, there was little agreement over exactly what might happen if all are approved.

"The Legislature has offered voters a plan for two casinos to be located anywhere.

"A gambling coalition's petition drive would offer voters a plan calling for two casinos on Omaha's riverfront, plus 4,900 slot and video poker machines statewide.

"...Gambling coalition members argue that if voters approve both proposals, both will prevail because they do not conflict.

"...Gambling foes disagree. They believe the two proposals conflict on several levels, including the question of how much more gambling will be allowed in Nebraska..."
