Gambling Knows No Borders

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "Massachusetts residents drop a lot of money gambling outside the state's borders, notably at Connecticut's casinos. But out-of-staters spend a lot here, too, hauled in by the state Lottery.

"Four of the top 10 towns for sales per capita border another state, including the top two - Salisbury and Tyngsboro, according to Lottery data.

"…Salisbury, by far, has the highest Lottery sales per capita - the amount of Lottery purchases made divided by the community's population. Its 24 vendors generated $28.5 million in sales so far in 2004 - equal to $3,643 for every resident of the seaside town.

"…Denise Houde, the owner of Denise's, a general store in Salisbury, said those figures are a bit deceiving `because we have two Lottery-only stores. All they do is sell the Lottery, Keno and so forth.'

"Those outlets get a lot of business from New Hampshire residents but just about every vendor in Salisbury gets some revenue from across the border, Houde said…"
