Gambling in Philippine Schools Ordered Shut Down

PHILIPPINES – As reported by the (Philippines) Nation: "President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday directed all concerned authorities to shut down all kinds of gambling operations and game stations within school premises nationwide.

"The President called on the parents, school authorities, and the community itself in stopping all forms of gambling and 'other nefarious activities' around our schools.

"Malacañang issued the directive following the report of the Philippine Center of Investigative Journalism on the gambling and betting activities happening in high schools and universities.

"…Responding to orders from Malacañang, Philippine National Police (PNP) Director-General Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr. yesterday immediately ordered a crackdown on all forms of illegal gambling activities in and around the vicinity of schools and universities.

"…The traditional forms of illegal gambling such as jueteng, sakla, and pula-puti, have been overshadowed by the immense popularity of computer gambling, most notably among teenagers…"
