Gambling in Ohio gaining steam

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As reported by the Toledo Blade: "Gambling is suddenly on a roll in Ohio.

"The primary backers of a proposed constitutional amendment authorizing casinos in Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati yesterday filed petitions purportedly containing more than 850,000 signatures of registered voters, more than double the number needed to put the question on the Nov. 3 ballot.

"Now the scrutiny of those petitions begins. Such massive ballot initiatives have historically been fraught with a large number of signature disqualifications due to error or outright fraud.

"Meanwhile, retailers, grocers, restaurants, beer distributors, and several other business groups threw their combined lobbying weight behind Gov. Ted Strickland's recent about-face to support slot machines at racetracks to help close a $3.2 billion budget gap..."
