Gambling Foes Warn of Unholy Alliance as Racinos Arrive in Maritimes20 September 2004FREDERICTON -- As reported by the Canadian Press: "Racinos are coming to the Maritimes and proponents of the racetrack gaming centres say they're a sure bet to save the region's troubled harness racing industry. "But opponents warn no good will come from what they consider an unholy union between the flashing lights of electronic gambling and the pounding hooves of the race track. "'We don't need them,' says Don Bishop, an uncompromising opponent of video lottery terminals in New Brunswick ever since his son, Eric, committed suicide in 1998. "...Prince Edward Island is the first Maritime province out of the gate with its recent approval of a $25 million gaming complex to be built at the old, down-on-its-luck Charlottetown Driving Park. "...The Atlantic Lottery Corp. will build the centre, popularly referred to as a "racino" in a play on the words 'race' and 'casino.' "The new facility, which the lottery corporation prefers to call a "racing entertainment centre," will feature a massive gaming room with more than 200 gambling terminals..." |
