Gambling firms to be forced to pay levy to fund treatment

LONDON, England -- As reported by The Guardian: "Gambling operators will be forced to pay a levy to fund the treatment of problem gambling under government proposals due to be published tomorrow.

"The move is believed to be a hard-hitting response by ministers to the failure of gambling operators to hand over sufficient funds on a voluntary basis.

"A charity established to raise funds from the gambling sector to pour into education, research and the treatment of problem gambling is around £1m short of its expected target, it has emerged. As a result, Gerry Sutcliffe, the sports minister, is due to unveil a consultation document that will suggest imposing a statutory levy on all gambling operators, with different rates of contributions set according to the size of the company..."
