Gambling Drives Goa's Economy

GOA, India – As reported by Channel News Asia: "Lotteries throughout the world find ready buyers and sports events unfailingly attract bets, both legal and illegal.

"And this high appetite for risk is what drives the economy of Goa, a popular Indian resort. Goa is the only state to have legalised casinos.

"The state now has six casinos, among them the offshore Caravela which caters to the rich.

"Casinos and gambling in general remains largely frowned upon by Indian society although there are some who want to see this changed.

"…Alan Wilson, Managing Director of Will Red Leisure said: 'Gambling at the moment takes place out of this country with rupees flooding into such places as Nepal and Sri Lanka. Money is flowing out of India which could stay here and be taxed.'…"
