Gambling Addict Admits to Stealing Laptops24 August 2004SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by the South Africa Business Day: "A 60-year-old man who pleaded guilty to stealing laptop computers valued at nearly R500,000 is to be sentenced in September, Gauteng police said. "Inspector Amanda Roestoff said Lenasia resident Mahmood Ebrahim Akhalwaya pleaded guilty last Wednesday in the Randburg Magistrate's Court to 19 charges of theft of items ranging from laptop computers to personal belongings. "Akhalwaya's 19-month theft spree from October 2002 to April 2004 was brought to an end when he was arrested by Detective Shaun Robson of the Johannesburg Computer Task Team at Montecasino in Fourways on April 21. "Most of the victims were foreign nationals living in luxurious hotels in Rosebank, Fourways, Morningside, Midrand, Kyalami, Magaliesburg, Pretoria, Centurion and Sandton, and at casinos in the Gauteng area. "…Roestoff said Akhalwaya is a compulsive gambler and stole in order to support his habit. "The laptops were not recovered and Akhalwaya admitted having sold them for gambling money…" |
