Gamblers Take Off for Cambodia14 June 2004THAILAND – As reported by the Bangkok Post: "Thousands of Thai people crossed the border during the weekend to casinos in Cambodia where they could place bets on the Euro 2004 soccer matches. "Pol Maj-Gen Pongsaphat Pongcharoen, police spokesman and deputy chief of the Immigration Police Bureau, said 5,619 people travelled to Cambodia via immigration checkpoints at Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaeo province, Pong Nam Ron in Chanthaburi, Kap Choeng in Surin, and Khlong Yai in Trat. "…Pol Lt-Col Chalermpol Jintarat, deputy chief of the Aranyaprathet immigration office, said the number of people travelling through the Aranyaprathet checkpoint swelled yesterday and he believed it could reach 10,000. "…Travellers said bookies had set up tables at various casinos in Poipet for punters to place their bets. "…Apart from Thailand, soccer betting is reported to have also been rampant in neighbouring Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong…" |
