Gamblers Charged with Abandoning Kids14 July 2003LOUISIANA -- As reported by the QC Times: ``It was broad daylight and the temperature was in the upper 80s to lower 90s when Isle of Capri Casino security officers found two children alone inside a van in the Bettendorf riverfront complex’s parking garage. ``The vehicle’s windows were rolled down and the keys were in the ignition. The parents, who have been charged, went to gamble on that Monday afternoon last month, leaving the children, ages 2 and 6, to fend for themselves. ``Bettendorf police estimate the youngsters were alone in the van for 30 to 40 minutes before the security patrol spotted them. ``The older child told officers that her parents were “on the boat playing games.” The younger child was sitting in an infant carrier kept in place by a seat belt. ``Although the children were unharmed, police said the situation could have been much worse had they not been found so quickly. It also could have far worse if the van had been parked in the sun with the windows up. ``…The parents… were charged with child endangerment and taken to the Scott County Jail. They were out the next day on pre-trial release…” |
