Gambler: Casinos Cheating Dealers

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "William Gumper likes to tip craps dealers by placing a dollar bet on their behalf. If it wins, he says, the payoff is a dollar (plus the dollar bet) at almost all of the city's casinos.

"On Wednesday, Gumper pointed out to the Casino Control Commission that all casinos by law should pay at least 9-to-5 odds on such place bets, or $1.80.

"By rounding down to a dollar instead of up to $2, they're cutting such tips for their dealers in half.

"'They've been doing this for years. Bally's is the only one that's doing this legally. The others have been blatantly violating this,' said Gumper, a longtime craps player and 71-year-old retired New York City police officer from Toms River.

"Casinos typically do not allow dollar bets unless designated for a dealer tip.

"Dollar place bets are awkward for casinos because no gaming chip used in craps here is worth less than $1.

"…Gumper's campaign could be a gamble for dealers, the very people he's trying to help: If the casino commission cracks down on the alleged low payouts, casinos would either be forced to round up winning dollar wagers or refuse dollar bets because they aren't worth the hassle.

"Gumper singled out Caesars Atlantic City for scorn, saying its casino managers were arrogant when he informed them about their erroneous payouts…"
