Gambler Accused of Plotting to Kill Father3 November 2003SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by the Cape Argus: "A man from Diep River in Cape Town who was apparently desperate to pay off his gambling debts, allegedly approached a hitman to kill his retired father so that he could cash in as the only beneficiary of his father's multi-million rand estate. "But his plan went awry when he bet on the wrong accomplice and was subsequently arrested. "…The man, who had lived with his father, and who has been described as a `mechanic of sorts' and a `spoilt brat', was said to have been in dire financial difficulty. "…It was understood the suspect would receive about R3-million (US$432,091) on his father's death. "Earlier this year he inherited R500 000 from his grandmother, but had apparently gambled away every penny. "After frittering away this money, he had run up major gambling debts. This allegedly prompted him to plot his father's murder. "He approached one of his `gambling buddies' to find him a hitman. "…Police Superintendent Nina Kirsten said the `buddy' had instead informed the police of the man's plan. The police had then decided to set a trap…" |
