Fresno mayor to veto gambling amendement

FRESNO, California -- As reported by the Fresno Bee: "The Fresno City Council voted to lift the limit on how much players can bet in the popular card game Texas Hold 'em at a downtown casino.

"But Mayor Alan Autry plans to stop the high-stakes poker game before it's ever dealt at Club One. He said he will veto the amendment the council approved Tuesday.

"Club One wants to attract players interested in no-limit Hold 'em, which they can play only at American Indian casinos or on the Internet, owner George Sarantos said. Club One is losing customers to Indian casinos.

"...Players of Texas Hold 'em aren't competing against the house, so Club One wouldn't make more money from increased betting, Sarantos said.

"...Autry said he is not convinced of any benefit to the city..."
