French Lick guests wager casino will be success

FRENCH LICK, Indiana — Indiana's 11th casino, the French Lick Resort Casino, opened yesterday morning amid predictions of better economic days ahead for Orange County.

"More than 4,000 invited guests tried their hand at gambling after a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included casino executives, local supporters and officials with the two companies that teamed up to develop the $382 million project.

"'The state gaming commission said we're in pretty good shape,' Bill Cook, the founder of Cook Group Inc., one of the partners, said in a brief interview yesterday afternoon as he left the French Lick Springs Hotel.

"If the Indiana Gaming Commission gives its approval, the single-level, 1,200-slot casino is expected to open to the public at 8 a.m. Friday.

"…State gambling regulators said the 'soft' opening went smoothly. Last night, after the closing of the casino at midnight, the gaming commission staff was to evaluate how the staff handled the money collected from table games and slot machines, said Ernest Yelton, the commission's executive director…"
