Foxwoods Lures Rhode Island Workers

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Marianne LaPan ignored the protesters marching up and down the sidewalk yesterday. All she cared about was getting a job.

"LaPan went to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training's employment center in West Warwick first thing in the morning, specifically to talk to a Foxwoods Resort Casino recruiter about a job.

"…For the steady stream of people who made their way into the NetworkRI job center yesterday, all that mattered was that there were full-time jobs available. The casino debate wasn't a deterrent, and many didn't even care that the jobs are at a Connecticut casino and may require working night or graveyard shifts.

"…Foxwoods sent a recruiter to the state-run job center to look for employees to fill about 125 positions -- cashiers and cooks, restaurant servers and security officers. The company needs workers as it puts the finishing touches on its latest expansion, according to Sam Agnello, employment supervisor for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which runs Foxwoods.

"…The jobs that Foxwoods is recruiting for pay $8 to $9 an hour, and most of them come with health benefits, he said…"
