Foxwood, unions face off

CONNECTICUT -- As reported by the Hartford Courant: "As dealers at Foxwoods were gathering signatures this summer to force a vote on unionizing, the casino's owners were quietly taking action, too.

"The governing council of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, which owns and operates Foxwoods Resort Casino, passed its own version of the National Labor Relations Act. It gives a commission appointed by tribal leaders oversight of union elections by casino workers on the tribal reservation.

"The new tribal law is expected to be a central issue as the tribe and the Foxwoods dealers face off before a federal labor officer in Hartford this morning.

"At issue is whether 3,000 dealers at Foxwoods can vote to form a union, potentially opening one of the world's largest casinos to organized labor.

"...The Mashantucket Pequots plan to contest the UAW's petition for an election in a hearing before an NLRB officer today, saying the 2-month-old Mashantucket Pequot Labor Relations Law and several other labor laws the council has passed over the past 15 years apply on tribal land, said Bruce MacDonald, a tribal spokesman..."
