Former Tropicana owners won't leave without fight

TRENTON, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Unwilling to leave Atlantic City without a fight, the former owners of the Tropicana Casino and Resort urged an appeals court Tuesday to give them back their license and stop the casino's sale.

"But state attorneys argued against reinstating the license for the 'boss of bosses,' a stinging reference to William J. Yung III, the chief executive officer of a Kentucky-based gaming empire blamed for nearly running Tropicana into the ground last year.

"Yung, who heads Tropicana Entertainment LLC and affiliate Columbia Sussex Corp., was denied a license Dec. 12 after a tumultuous year of declining revenue, regulatory violations and mass layoffs that left the casino understaffed and dirty.

"…Beverly Tanenhaus, a deputy attorney general representing the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, called Yung 'the boss of bosses for Tropicana' and a man who could not be trusted. She argued that his testimony during Tropicana's licensing hearing was riddled with inconsistencies and undermined his credibility.

"…Tropicana attorney Karen Confoy denied that Yung had tried to mislead regulators about Tropicana's staffing cuts, operations or regulatory compliance.

"…Steven Ingis, assistant general counsel for the Casino Control Commission, cited a litany of alleged problems with Yung's ownership, including the failure to form an independent audit committee for six months…"
