Former Senator Defends Tribal Gaming22 June 2006NEW YORK – As reported by the Tonawanda News: "Former Colorado Senator Joseph Nighthorse Campbell told the lunch crowd at the New York Gaming Summit Wednesday that despite critics' contentions, gaming has been a major force in revitalizing Indian reservations around the country. "Citing the Seneca Niagara Casino in which the conference was held as an example, Campbell said that the success of such casinos is a step toward regaining 'what we've lost over hundreds of years.' "…Campbell was the keynote speaker at Wednesday's conference, which drew about 200 people from around Western New York and across the greater northeast. Name badges revealed visitors from Buffalo architecture and engineering firms, Nevada and Arizona gaming companies and Albany-based state agencies, among others. "Campbell, who was the only Native American serving in Congress when he retired in 2005 and co-authored the 1987 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, said that the societal issues that affect the U.S. population — diabetes, alcoholism and unemployment among them — are almost always more prevalent on reservations…" |
