Former Gaming Official: Atlantic City Casinos Face Competition15 December 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "The state's new acting labor commissioner made his first visit here Tuesday since taking the post, and sounded a lot like a guy still in the employ of the casino industry. "Former Casino Association of New Jersey President Thomas D. Carver warned that the state's gaming industry could be in trouble when gaming halls open in Pennsylvania and New York. "Proposed casinos in the Catskill Mountains of New York are only about 90 minutes from New York City, from where the resort pulls considerable business, he said. "…Carver said the state lost a golden opportunity to bolster the gaming industry here when it missed its chance to possibly institute sports betting in 1993. "Carver promised Tuesday to work with Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, to help him move a bill that would allow New Jersey voters to decide whether professional sports betting should be allowed at casinos here. "…While Carver admits it will be tough to bring sports betting to New Jersey, he doesn't intend to stop trying…" |
