Former cage manager sentenced for embezzlement

18 June 2008

RENO, Nevada -- As reported by the Reno Gazette Journal: "A former Silver Legacy cage manager was sentenced Tuesday to more than three years in prison for stealing $343,000 from the casino in a sophisticated embezzlement driven by her gambling addiction.

"Senior Judge Deborah Agosti sentenced Jami Romine, 42, to a concurrent term of 3.4 years to 10 years on two felony counts of theft. Romine, who pleaded guilty to the charges, faced up to 20 years in prison.

"Agosti, a former Nevada Supreme Court Justice, said this was the largest embezzlement of this sort she has seen in 25 years, calling the theft 'staggering' and 'frightening.'

"Romine found loopholes in the casino's accounting procedures and exploited them for three years, Deputy District Attorney Luke Prengaman said. She created 32 bogus player accounts for which she would approve 30-day loans using the password of a casino executive.

"She then gambled the money away. No one caught on to the scheme because she rolled over the markers to keep them current.

"...Agosti also ordered Romine to pay $343,000 restitution to the Silver Legacy. Prengaman said Romine likely will never be able to pay..."
