Former Australian PM helped blocked casinos

2 January 2008

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by the ABC News: "Former prime minister Sir Robert Menzies played a key role in blocking early plans for a casino in Canberra, Cabinet documents released under the 30-year rule have confirmed.

"The papers issued today by the National Archives show Sir Robert wrote a letter of support to a committee formed to oppose the scheme.

"...The then-Capital Territory minister Tony Staley had told the ACT Assembly its plan for a casino 'appeared generally feasible'.

"But the former prime minister's letter may have swayed Cabinet because a casino did not open for business until July 1994."
