Forest City reveals temporary casino plans

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: "In a surprise move, Forest City Enterprises unveiled plans today for a temporary casino at Station Square after saying for months it would be the only bidder for Pittsburgh's slots license without one.

"The temporary casino would hold 1,500 slot machines in an existing building at the South Side entertainment complex, east of the Smithfield Street Bridge. It could open by October 2007, while the permanent casino would open May 1, 2009.

"'We think there is a strong pent-up demand for casino gambling in Pittsburgh,' said Brian Ratner, Forest City's director. 'We will have a temporary casino up and running in 2007 to turn on the revenue tap for the Commonwealth,' he added.

"Cleveland-based Forest City Enterprises was the first of the three bidders for Pittsburgh's lone slots license to make its presentation during two days of hearings before the state Gaming Control Board.

"…The 65,000-square-foot temporary casino would cost $82 million. The total proposed project cost has increased to $717.5 million, not including the future development of condominiums and retail space on the site…"
