Foreign students fill job openings

ONNETICUT -- As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "When Kasia Ludka arrived in the United States after a long journey from her native Poland, she was astonished by how big everything was.

"...Ludka is among more than 630 exchange students working at the region's two American Indian casinos this summer. In addition to Poland, workers have come from Ukraine, Serbia, Moldavia and Lithuania.

"When Ludka heard about casinos hiring people, she quickly applied for the Work and Travel Program offered by Direct Educational Exchange, a recruitment agency in California.

"...Although the number of exchange students employed at the casinos may seem high, Jason Guyot, director of employment and diversity at Foxwoods, said the temporary workers are not taking jobs from local residents.

"...Don Trella, director of recruitment, preference and licensing at Mohegan Sun, said hiring the exchange students helps with summer staffing issues.

"...Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun have recruited foreign exchange students for the past five or six years. Spokesmen at both casinos said their experiences with the students have been positive..."
