Football Clubs Bet on Gambling18 October 2004UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the BBC: "Football supporters will be able to take a punt on roulette or a play a few hands of blackjack before going to see their team play in the future. "UK gambling laws are about to be relaxed and gaming organisations from the UK and US have been honing in on possible partners. "Leeds United became the latest UK club on Monday to unveil a deal with a casino operator. "Newcastle United, Glasgow Rangers, West Ham, Sheffield United, Coventry, Gillingham, and even League One's Hull City, have all revealed plans to tie-up with Las Vegas casino groups over the past year. "…For many football clubs, faced with rising player costs and falling match day revenues, the benefits of an alternative off-the-pitch source of income are obvious. "…Many clubs already promote online casinos on their websites. "…'The casino operators see a market up for grabs,' said Michael Stirling, of London law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse, who advises football clubs on investment. "…Mr Stirling said the casino operators would be getting 'relatively cheap deals' by siding with football clubs, with thousands of potential punters and established locations…" |
