Floridan House sues over compact30 January 2008TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- As reported by the Florida Sun-Sentinel: "Gov. Charlie Crist far exceeded his authority when he negotiated a gambling compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, attorneys for the House of Representatives argued before the state Supreme Court on Wednesday morning. "The House has challenged the agreement reached between Crist and the tribe that allows the Indians to offer not only Las Vegas-style slots but also card games like blackjack and baccarat at its seven casinos across the state. "The court is being asked to invalidate the compact on the grounds that Crist made major changes in public policy without getting legislative approval. "...But attorneys representing Crist argued the governor made a 'battlefield decision' when he signed off on the compact, knowing that if he had not acted the U.S. Department of Interior would allow slot machines at the tribal casinos and the state wouldn't get a dime off the deal..." |
