Florida to Regulate Casino-Like Video Arcades25 November 2003SANFORD, Florida – As reported by the Orlando Sentinel: "With casino-like video arcades popping up across Central Florida, Sanford officials decided they had to do something. The choices were simple -- declare them illegal and shut them down as Volusia County recently did or treat them like other unwanted businesses and regulate them to the hilt. "On Monday, Sanford came down on the side of regulation. "…Arcades that want to operate in the city would have to meet strict regulations on location, hours of operation and personnel under an ordinance approved by the Sanford City Commission. "…Sanford's new rules would require adult video arcades to get a special permit that sets strict conditions on their operation. Adult arcades would be limited to industrial areas, could operate only between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. and would have to be at least 1,500 feet from any school, day-care business, church, public library, public park, residential areas, any business that sells alcoholic beverages or any other adult arcade. "In addition, employees must be at least 21 years old and cannot have been convicted of any charges involving gambling or moral turpitude for at least five years. Each video slot machine in the arcade also would have to be registered with the city…" |
