Florida Slot Bill Gets Bogged Down

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the South Florida Sun Sentinel: "With only one day left in the annual session, the chances grew slimmer that the Legislature would pass bills allowing slot machines in Broward County.

"The Florida Senate on Thursday again postponed consideration of a bill that would set tax rates, the type of machines to be allowed and dozens of regulatory details. Although the House voted out its bill earlier this week, it contained a stiff 55 percent tax and allowed only bingo-style machines such as those used at the state's Indian casinos, provisions that are unacceptable to the pari-mutuel industry.

"Negotiators from each chamber appeared to come closer to a deal this week, with the Senate agreeing to raise tax rates and the House agreeing to Las Vegas-style slots, according to lobbyists for the pari-mutuels.

"…The pari-mutuel industry, which was hoping that slots would compensate for their dwindling audiences, plans to go to court if the Legislature fails to come through…"
