Florida Police Union Endorses Gambling Proposal

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by South Florida Sun-Sentinel: "A union representing more than 3,100 state police officers on Tuesday endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Broward and Miami-Dade voters to decide if they want slot machines at local tracks and frontons.

"Members of the Florida Branch of the International Union of Police Associations said they see no evidence of increased crime as a result of Indian gaming that already exists in South Florida and don't believe crime will rise if slots go into horse and dog tracks and jai-alai frontons.

"The proposed amendment would allow for local referendums in Broward and Miami-Dade counties on whether enhanced gaming can be offered at seven existing pari-mutuel venues but requires that tax dollars raised off the slot machines be funneled into enhancements for public schools across the state..."
