Florida Helpline Reports Increased Calls

12 July 2004

FLORIDA – As reported by the Gainesville Sun: "The renewed popularity of poker has led to increased calls for help from players with problems, including a significant number of students, according to a spokesman for Florida's Gamblers Anonymous.

"'Tom,' a consultant for the statewide Gamblers Anonymous and a recovering compulsive gambler, said that since the advent of Internet gambling, his group has seen an increase in calls to its hot lines.

"…'He said in Florida, about 5 percent of people who gamble at some point will develop a problem with it.

"…He encourages people who suspect they may have a problem with cards or any other form of gambling to call the statewide Gamblers Anonymous toll-free hot line — (800) 426-7711."
