Florida Governor Vetoes Instant Bingo

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the St. Petersburg Times: "Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed a plan Wednesday to allow Florida charities and veterans groups to sell instant bingo games, thwarting state lawmakers who overwhelmingly approved it just weeks before.

"Bush delivered his veto on the final day before the bill (HB 187) otherwise would have become law, saying he opposed the plan because it would expand gambling.

"The governor also wrote that he believed the pull-tab bingo games - where the cards are printed with winning numbers and players peel away covers to reveal their hand - would violate the state Constitution, which authorizes only the Florida Lottery to run lottery games.

"…But Bush's last-minute veto frustrated lawmakers, who said they had little notice of his opposition before they passed the bill.

"…Lawmakers of both parties said they were surprised to see Bush oppose something sought by every major veteran's group in the state…"
