Florida County May Ban Slots

SANFORD, Florida – As reported by the Orlando Sentinel: "Controversial video-slot machines could be banned countywide if Seminole County commissioners adopt a new gambling ordinance Tuesday.

"Three months ago, the commission imposed a moratorium on video slots. Now, the proposed ordinance would make it illegal for anyone to own one of the machines for commercial use.

"…County officials say the ordinance is necessary to stop the casinolike arcades popping up across Central Florida. Several counties have had to adopt ordinances because of Florida's "cloudy" gambling statutes, assistant county attorney Karen Z. Consalo said.

"Florida statutes ban slot machines, but a 1997 revision created an exception for arcade amusement centers and truck stops. Those businesses can operate games of skill, in which players receive points or coupons that can be exchanged for merchandise…"
