Florida County Approves Parimutuel Agreement

FLORIDA – As reported by the Miami Herald: "Broward County commissioners approved an agreement this morning with four parimutuels that want to add slot machines, but they still haven't approved a March 8 election that would put the issue to voters.

"The County Commission is scheduled to consider the special referendum today during its 2 p.m. meeting.

"Commissioners are likely to approve the election, to be held the same day that Broward cities hold municipal elections. Miami-Dade commissioners are expected to agree Thursday to hold a similar slots election the same day.

"If voters approve the referendum, slot machines would be allowed at seven race tracks, dog tracks and jai alai frontons in the two counties. Some 10,000 could eventually be in play in Broward; another 6,500 in Miami-Dade.

"…It's a pretty safe bet that voters in both counties will approve slot machines if they get the opportunity…"
